What Are “Big Truth Questions?”
Big Truth Questions are key truths about God, The Bible, and other central theological topics that are vital to our children’s spiritual development. Throughout history, these questions have been referred to as a catechism which simply means a lesson that teaches us truths about God. However, since there is a negative stigma that often accompanies this word, we have chosen the much friendlier title of “Big Truth Questions.”
How Are “Big Truth Questions” Meant to Be Used?
Throughout history, these questions have been taught in numerous ways depending upon the natural bent of both the parents and children who use them. For example, some parents block out structured time at the kitchen table where they work through them. Other parents use flash cards. Other parents simply memorize the questions themselves and recite them during day-to-day and playtime activities. Some parents even use them in a game format and give tiny prizes for correct answers. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to use the Big Truth Questions as long as they are done consistently, with love and grace, and with the ultimate end being that your children would come to love and embrace these key truths within them and with the hope of them ultimately coming to faith in Jesus.
Why Scripture Memory?
The following facts are well documented in child development research: Most children can learn much more than we give them credit for. Memorization at early age is a great way for children to learn. Most individuals who come to Christ do so before the age of 13. With all of these statements being true, we count it both a privilege and a necessity to deeply invest the Word of God in our children from an early age. After all, since their greatest need is Jesus, it seems wise to give them healthy doses of what best reveals Christ to us—His Word.

How Much Should My Children Learn at a Time?
You will notice that they chunks of Scripture that are included here are quite ambitious. Feel free to both challenge your child as well as be sensitive to their own pace and learning style. If your children are already memorizing verses for school, that is fine. We simply wanted to provide this additional resource as well.
What If My Children Don’t Want to Do Them?
It is our responsibility to make learning fun. Typically this is the reason. Be creative! Feel free to talk to other Crossing parents or contact the office for ideas.
We must always remember that God has put us as parents in charge of our homes, not our children. We have a divinely given responsibility to shepherd our children’s spiritual development. When used correctly, these questions can be an exciting and important part of the puzzle. Don’t be afraid to be the parent! After all, you know what’s best for your kids.
